“Not splashing £100m”- Paul Merson on Newcastle’s transfer and takes dig at Manchester City signing

About Football Express UK

Football Pundit Paul Merson makes Nick Pope transfer admission, claims Newcastle signing better than Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.

Nick Pope’s move to Newcastle United has given the fans a lot to look out for in the next season. The club secured the services of the goalkeeper for a mere sum of £10 million in the transfer window.

Keen to work with the club, Nick Pope has already begun pre-season training sessions with the Magpies. Football pundit, Paul Merson in his view feels the player could succeed at the club for the level he maintains.

Merson rates Newcastle United’s signing ahead of Erling Haaland

Merson believes the club made a reasonable bargain for the keeper aiming a sly dig at City signing Erling Haaland.

He said-

“Nick Pope is a top goalkeeper, it’s ridiculous that Newcastle United got a player of his calibre for as little as £10 million,”

“If Jordan Pickford hadn’t done so well for Everton at the business end of last season, you could’ve argued that there is much between him and Pope – that’s how good a player the former Burnley man is.”

The pundit also heaped praise on the Magpies’ gaffer, Eddie Howe, and his idea of building a new team for next season. He further said-

“Eddie Howe is looking to build a team that can compete in the Premier League. It could take them five to six years, but they are doing a steady job and not splashing £100 million on a player just for the sake of it – they are learning to walk before they can run.”

“If they can get 10th place and probably win one of the domestic cups, that would be a fantastic season for Newcastle. Pope will save them points and is a top, top goalkeeper for their project.”

While the statements to a certain level do seem understandable considering how Pep’s City makes exorbitant signings. However, rating Pope above Haaland may have seen out of place considering what the striker is capable of.

We wonder if the Newcastle signing is worth being rated higher than the City striker. However, things will unfold swiftly in the coming season.
