Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo finally speaks out for the first time after Portugal got knocked out from this year’s Euro by France.

This was supposedly the final match that Ronaldo played for Portugal in the Euro. The Portuguese star confirmed that this would be his last Euro cup competition. Roberto Martinez’s Portugal crashed out of the Euro on 6th July. It was a 0-0 draw against France till the 120th minute of the game. The French team eliminated Portugal on penalties, with Portugal losing 3-5. This was an emotional farewell for two greats of the game – Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe.

Dissecting the match between Portugal and France

Until the 120th minute of the game, the match remained a 0-0 draw. Portugal seemed slightly superior to France. However, we can confidently state that this was one of the dullest matches ever played in the knockout stages of the Euro. Both the teams did not play quality football. There were no proper build-up plays, creativity or goal. Portugal lacked creativity in the midfield and their wingers were pretty ineffective. Same goes for the French team. Kylian Mbappe failed to make an impact in this match, which was not surprising given his recent form.

Portugal fans heavily criticized Joao Felix as he was the only Portuguese player to miss his penalty by hitting the post. Some people believe he is being made a scapegoat, while others have questioned the manager’s decisions during the game. Roberto Martinez’s choices regarding substitutions and tactics for Portugal have come under scrutiny.

  1. Was there any need for Ronaldo to play for 120 minutes?
  2. Why was Bruno Fernandes substituted? He was one of the best penalty takers in the squad
  3. Why weren’t Diogo Jota or Goncalo Ramos brought on?
