Chelsea Interested in 29-Year-Old Defender

Chelsea Stadium

Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Mario Hermoso whose contract with Atletico Madrid expired on 30th June. The 29-year-old was previously close to signing for Napoli but both parties failed to agree on personal terms. The Spaniard is sure to bring a lot of experience to the team if signed. However, players like Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Axel Disasi, and Wesley Fofana already constitute an overpopulated defensive lineup. This makes the move for Hermoso unlikely even if a sale is made.

Chelsea Vision for New Season

The London club booked a place in the Europa League last season, though Manchester United’s victory in FA Cup saw them drop to the Conference League. The latter stages of last season saw Chelsea to rise up to sixth place from the bottom 10. Surprisingly, this did not stop the then manager, Mauricio Pochettino, from leaving the club. Subsequently, former Leicester manager, Enzo Maresca was appointed as the new head coach.

Under the regime of Todd Boehly, Chelsea have enjoyed a spending spree by making multiple signings. Maresca’s team saw many new arrivals which include Marc Guiu, Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Drewsbury-Hall, and Renato Veiga. The Blues lost an important defender in Thiago Silva who left the club at the end of the season. The Brazilian legend was a huge asset at the back and put much of his experience to work. Nevertheless, there is no paucity of defenders and the Italian boss will be trying various combinations of his back four.

Last season saw the rise of Cole Palmer after he made a permanent switch from Manchester City. The City Academy star scored a total of 22 goals, making him the second highest goalscorer in the 2023/24 season. His consistent performances bailed his team out of tight situations time and time again. He is capable of operating as both an attacker and a playmaker, making him a number one choice for Maresca. The overall squad possesses speed, agility and strength which can help promote a fast-attacking side.

The forward position will have the Italian scratching his head. Nicolas Jackson, even after an underwhelming season, scored 14 goals in the Premier League. Other forwards including Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Noni Madueke failed to reach the double figures mark. No matter, the new manager is poised to get the best out of his players. It is not an exaggeration to say that he will have his sights set on silverware.

Talks of Exits

Enzo Maresca will be looking to get rid of deadwoods in order to start afresh. Romelu Lukaku is focusing on another Serie A move to Napoli, though it is unclear whether it is a permanent move. There are also talks of Chalobah’s exit as soon as he receives an offer from a Champions League club. On the other had, Kepa will be looking to bring his time at the club to an end. Petrovic displayed some fantastic league performances though reports suggest that Robert Sanchez will be Maresca’s number one choice as the goalkeeper.
