Arsenal have their eyes set on Nico Williams. The gunners are convinced of his quality. Nico’s electric form at the Euro 2024 has been telling. Arsenal are to battle Spanish giants Barcelona to acquire his services.
Barcelona fans are excited to see the dynamic Spanish duo play at their own club and for just reasons. Yamal and Nico were instrumental in Spain’s undefeated Euro run. They provided width and technical flair on the either flanks. Their creativity in the final third decided the outcome of most of their fixtures. Nico scored a goal from Yamal’s assist in the Final. Barcelona have entertained these exciting possibilities with their club president Joan Laporta saying “Today Barca could cope financially with a signing like Nico Williams.
Should Arsenal worry over losing Nico Williams to Barcelona?
Barcelona may have made statements and made inquiries about Nico Williams. But they are far from signing him. Laporta’s statements have caused displeasure to several players in the club. Their pending contract issues and Barca’s elongated financial crisis makes it tricky for them to sign any player.
Meanwhile, there are several underlying issues at Arsenal other than Barcelona. Firstly Nico’s hefty sum of €58m which needs to be paid upfront is a big issue. Secondly, Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta might be hesitant to break his carefully put together wage structure to accommodate him. Williams will possibly ask for somewhere around £250,000 in weekly wages to leave Athletic Bilbao.
Arteta believes that Nico is the perfect player to provide cover for both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in each flank. However, many gunners are skeptical of bringing a Spanish player who has no prior experience of paying in the harsh conditions of London for such a substantial amount.
According to Metro Arsenal are most likely to sell one of their attacking players before bringing in Nico. Emile Smith Rowe is in talks to leave the team with 2yrs still left in his contract. . Arsenal have turned down an initial offer of Smith Rowe, having started only two premier league games for Arsenal desires more first-team football. Arsenal have rejected an initial bid of £30M from Fulham. Fulham are in talks to return with an improved bid, close to Arsenal’s ask of £40M.
Arsenal have put a lot of effort in their attempts to sign Nico but everyone in Spain and Barcelona are rooting to see the Spanish national team duo to team up. Nico’s arrival in Barcelona will be a sort of reply to Real Madrid’s much awaited signing of Kylian Mbappe, balancing the scales somewhat. It will be interesting to see how each teams proceed to sign this brilliant player.
