Liverpool have been awfully quiet this summer with their signings. They have been linked with many stars with Marc Guehi being the latest name to come up in their books. The Crystal Palace defender saw a significant rise in his market value after a spectacular spell at England at Euro 2024.
According to Fabrizio Romano, negotiations are ongoing between Liverpool and Crystal Palace for the centre-back. As the Euros come to an end, the situation around him is likely to get more intense. Apart from the Anfield club, Arsenal are looking to sign Guehi.

Solidifying Defence is a Priority
On paper, Liverpool’s defensive lineup is one to be wary of, but their performance last season tells a different story. Virgil Van Dijk, who remains the number one choice for the Reds, is not getting any younger. Even he was not free from errors but still rose up to the team’s rescue in several occasions. The end of last season saw a deterioration in Konate’s form and Jarell Quansah’s inexperience does not make it any better. This creates a pressing need for another centre-back who can provide some reassurance in the back.
Liverpool are said to be ‘super confident’ of signing Guehi who is expected to add much needed experience. England teammate, Jude Bellingham, heaped praise on the defender calling him ‘brilliant’ after an exemplary performance against Serbia. He was able to fill the void left by the exits of Harry Maguire and Ben White with his consistent performances. He clocked a top speed of a maximum speed of 32.8 km/h and had a passing accuracy of 92.67 % in the Euros. These attributes may help shape a defence probably capable of putting a halt to the reign of Manchester City.
Liverpool’s Strategy and Timing
As the players return from their international duties, the transfer window is set to move at a much faster pace. The Premier League is a month away from commencement and thus, many teams will look to finalise their deals quickly. Liverpool’s interest in Guehi seems prompt and well timed considering the potential increase in transfer activities. Although the Crystal Palace player will not come cheap at £65m, it can be perceived as a long-term investment. By securing the services of a young defender, Arne Slot’s team is considering options their options for seasons to come.
Moreover, Guehi’s defensive capabilities align perfectly with the club’s playing system and his availability to them could not be any more desirable. Crystal Palace are not in a hurry to sell the player as he still has 2 years left in his contract. Only time will tell whether he will be at Anfield or not next season.
