Football Pundit, Paul Merson has expressed his views on Liverpool’s midfield, saying it requires reinforcements to compete for titles.
Red’s boss Jurgen Klopp, like every season, is trying everything to make vital signings to compete at a great level. Having made impact signings such as that of Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho, the club seems in decent shape.
However, Paul Merson thinks otherwise, as he believes the club will still need to make adjustments in the midfield. He also made a subtle comparison with direct rivals Manchester City and their depth in the same region.
Liverpool in need of midfield strengthening?
In order for clubs to compete for titles, all the fronts on the pitch need to have good depth. Merson, too in his column for Sportskeeda, mentioned what Liverpool requires in the midfield.
He writes-
“I think Liverpool are crying out for a midfield player. I don’t think their midfield is strong enough. Jude Bellingham is a good player, and I think he would be a great signing.”
“Liverpool are currently relying solely on their full-backs for energy. Thiago’s not a box-to-box midfielder, and Jordan Henderson is another year older.
They need legs in midfield, and Jude Bellingham could be that box-to-box presence for the side”
The statements by Merson seem to make sense as the club will need to replace Jordan Henderson at some point. Entering the final stages of his professional career, Liverpool will be better off if they find a long-term solution.
Moreover, the Dortmund ace has expressed his love for the Anfield club previously and is a big fan of Liverpool. The ace could join the Reds next season and the signing will be one for the future.
However, it remains to be seen if Bellingham does join Liverpool next season from Dortmund.
