Manchester United and Liverpool ready to go head-to-head for Saul

About Football Express UK

As per the report in Spanish outlet AS, Manchester United and Liverpool have held a talk with the entourage of Atlético de Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez over a possible summer move.

The 26-year-old had been an integral part of Diego Simeone’s side but has struggled in finding regular first-team actions in the past couple of campaigns. The midfielder is expected to leave the Spanish capital this summer after spending thirteen years with the Rojiblancos.

The Spanish international has been tipped of a possible swap deal with Barcelona involving Antoine Griezmann. But, the negotiation has not progressed at all. The stumbling block in this negotiation is the hefty salary of the Frenchman. And the Blaugrana are wanting money in this swap deal.

Saul also had a meeting with Premier League clubs Manchester United and Liverpool. The Red Devils are looking for a new midfielder this summer with Paul Pogba’s future being a subject of concern for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. On the other hand, following the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum, Liverpool are also in the market for a new midfielder.

Will Atletico sell Saul to the Premier League this summer?

According to the report in AS, negotiations with Barcelona have stalled regarding a potential transfer. Liverpool or Manchester United could be the possible destination for the 26-year-old midfielder.

The report further claims that Atletico Madrid are looking to sign a new centre-forward this summer and in order to fulfil that wish they will have to sell Saul. The midfielder’s current market value is £34.2 million and the potential suitor might sign him at a significantly cheaper price.

Meanwhile, Manchester United desperately need a defensive central midfielder this summer regardless of Pogba’s future. But, they haven’t linked with one apart from Eduardo Camavinga, signing the teenager will be a better purchase for the Red Devils than buying Saul who will be more expensive and is not a defensive midfielder by trade.

Liverpool will be the perfect destination for the Atletico man. Following the departure of Wijnaldum, the Reds need a new midfielder. However, the lack of athleticism of the 26-year-old might hamper Jurgen Klopp in implementing his high-press system. So, it will be interesting to see what will be the destination for Saul this summer.
