Doherty said that Wolves wouldn’t let Man City go easy with them for the title race

Matt Doherty has warned Manchester City that Wolverhampton Wanderers won’t let their standards slip this weekend despite not having much to play for in the final weeks of the season.

The Midlands club head to the Etihad for a Saturday 5:30pm kick-off and are aiming to ‘cause a bit of a shock’ by beating City for the second time this season. Gary O’Neil’s side won the reverse fixture 2-1 in September, one of just three Premier League games the champions have lost in 2023/24.

Wolves, in contrast, have little play for in the final three matches of the season, having secured Premier League survival but are too far off the European spots to mount a realistic challenge. Yet, that won’t impact Wolves this weekend, insisted Doherty.

Doherty warned City ahead of their clash with Wolves:

“We’ve got a whole week to prepare for City. We’ve beaten them already this season, so it’s a game we want to be competitive in and cause a bit of a shock at the top of the league,” the Irishman told the club’s website.

“It [standards slipping] is not allowed. The results haven’t been going for us, but we’re still pushing hard to win the games every time. We’re not on holiday mode or anything like that, there’s plenty for us to play for, personally and as a club.”

Having gone seven without a win in all competitions, Wolves grabbed a much-needed victory last week when they beat Luton Town 2-1 at Molineux.

“It was massive for us.said Doherty. “No win in seven and we still have aspirations to finish in the top 10, so we knew with two home games and two away games left, we knew the home games were vitally important. We made it a bit close for comfort at the end, more than we needed to, but it was a good win.”
