Chelsea in pole position to land Juventus centre-back

About Football Express UK

Chelsea are plotting a move for Serie A giants Juventus centre-back Matthijs De Ligt this summer in the transfer window.

The Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has made De Ligt as his ‘first choice’ and wants to secure his services this summer. This comes after Antonio Rudiger joined Real Madrid and Christensen is set to join FC Barcelona next season.

The transfer of Cesar Azpilicueta is also up in the air as Barcelona look to sign the defender from Chelsea. Tuchel is currently dealing with a void in his defensive position with the exits and looks to reinforce them swiftly.

Chelsea to land De Ligt to the Bridge?

The Blues were eyeing Sevilla’s Jules Koundé as a defensive reinforcement this summer. However, with growing interest from the Catalan giants, the defender could don the Blaugrana outfit next season.

Chelsea had not submitted any official offer yet for the Sevilla ace frustrating the player’s agent. Moreover, Tuchel’s side is on the lookout for other options for the position.

The gaffer’s first choice is De Ligt at the back and the club is now seriously considering the possibility of landing him at the Bridge.

Juventus are pushing to renew the centre-back’s contract beyond 2024. However, De Ligt has rebuffed the offer due to interest from other clubs including Chelsea.

The 22-year-old has been vital for the Turin-based club this season at the back. Surely, making a swoop for De Ligt to the Stamford Bridge would be a safe option.

However, Chelsea have not yet pulled out from the Koundé deal, starting a war of nerves with the Catalan giants. It remains to be seen if Tuchel will go all-in for De Ligt or find a replacement in Koundé this summer.

A defensive reinforcement this summer seems certain, it may be in the form of De Ligt or Koundé.
