Real Madrid 2-3 Chelsea: the Blues player ratings

About Football Express UK

Despite leading the game by 3-0 with 10 minutes to go, Chelsea have failed to overcome the challenge of Real Madrid in the quarterfinals of the Champions League

Thomas Tuchel’s side travelled to the Spanish capital intending to overcome a 3-1 deficit which they suffered at Stamford Bridge in the first leg. Meanwhile, the reigning European Champions started the game brilliantly and dominated the game for the first 70 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu.

During this spell, they managed to wipe out the deficit and were leading on aggregate courtesy of the contribution from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner. However, things went downhill after Rodrygo scored one back late in the game which equalled the game on aggregate.

The match went into the extra time and Karim Benzema scored another in the first half of the extra time which was enough to take the record European winners to the semi-final of this competition.

Chelsea player ratings against Real Madrid:

Edouard Mendy – 6/10

He was much better in this encounter than on the first leg but the Senegalese could not do anything about the two goals conceded.

Reece James – 7/10

The Englishman was solid in defence and also contributed going forward when he was required.

Thiago Silva – 6.5/10

Defensively, he did well enough and with possession, the veteran was very tidy.

Antonio Rudiger – 7/10

Scored the second goal but he had some trouble in defence.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 6/10

Started in an unfamiliar position but did well. However, it wasn’t his best performance of the night.

N’Golo Kante – 6/10

The Frenchman wasn’t at his best in recent weeks and it was his uncertainty that gifted the second goal to Los Blancos.

Mateo Kovacic – 7/10

The Croatian continues to showcase consistency in the Blue’s shirt and it was yet another productive performance from the former Real Madrid man.

Marcos Alonso – 7/10

He didn’t start in the first leg which turned out to be a big mistake. And the Spaniard did well in this encounter.

Mason Mount – 7.5/10

Scored the opener and also delivered a great cross for the second goal. Overall a very good performance by the Englishman.

Kai Havertz – 6/10

He missed a glorious opportunity and he failed to showcase his best in this game.

Timo Werner – 7.5/10

The German was a surprise addition to the starting eleven for this game but he did not disappoint as he scored the third and assisted the opener.

Substitutes:

Christian Pulisic – 5/10

He had two great opportunities to put the game to bed inside the regulation time but he failed to convert those chances.

Hakim Ziyech – 6.5/10

The Moroccan did well after coming onto the pitch but it wasn’t enough to help his team.

Jorginho – 5.5/10

The midfielder had a great chance at the dying embers of the extra time but he failed to connect with the ball properly.

Saul Niguez – 6/10

The Spaniard’s return to the Spanish capital wasn’t a happy one after failing to take his side over the line.
