Aston Villa to face tough competition for signing Rodrigo

About Football Express UK

Aston Villa is getting closer to signing Rodrigo in the closing stages of the January transfer window. However, they could face more competition in their bid to land the Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur this month.

The clock is racing and the January transfer window is about to end. Villa has time until 11 pm on Monday to make their final acquisition of the winter market. The Lions brought in players to cover the majority of the positions they wanted in this transfer window. However, they are in dire need of a defensive midfielder. With Marvelous Nakamba injured, the Villa’s need for a traditional midfield anchor has increased.

Nakamba suffered a knee injury and has to go under the knife. The injury will sideline the Zimbabwe international for about four months. As a result, Juventus midfielder Bentancur has been identified as a potential option. However, as the window approaches its end Villa could face a challenge to land the Uruguayan.

The Uruguay international started his youth career in Boca Juniors and eventually earned the senior cap with them. He later moved to Juventus having 133 appearances and scored 2 goals for the Italian giants.

Aston Villa’s possibility of signing Rodrigo

According to The Athletic, French side Olympique Lyon is interested in making a move for Bentancur. Guimaraes is set to sign for Newcastle United in a £35 million deal and that would leave Lyon flush with cash. As a result, the French side would be able to quickly do a deal for one of their transfer targets.

Lyon could force Villa into a bidding war for Bentancur and that may drive Villa out of negotiations. As per reports, Lyon has begun discussions about a move for Bentancur. The midfielder is rumoured to be available for about £21m this month.

As a result, Steven Gerrard’s side has thought about Giovani Lo Celso as an alternative. Spurs could let Lo Celso go as the Argentine is not in Antonio Conte’s plans.

Villa has been active this month and would look forward to completing their sixth signing in the form of Bentancur this winter.
