According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa and Barcelona have reached an agreement to sign defender Clement Lenglet. The French center-back, who spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, will return in the Premier League once more. The Frenchman started in 24 games out of 26 league appearances for Spurs in 2022-23. The Frenchman contributed in a 2-1 away win against Marseille in the Champions League. Thereby, scoring his only spurs goal by a good header.
Aston Villa signs Clement Lenglet as Mings’ replacement
Tyrone Mings sustained an injury that will keep him out for the majority of the season. Hence Aston Villa have responded with a bid for Lenglet. Mings strained his hamstring in the opening period of Villa’s 5-1 loss against Newcastle United. He will need to undergo surgery and be sidelined for more than six months. Thus, Aston Villa made a good move to obtain Lenglet as their fifth summer signing.
Barcelona began negotiating yesterday but a season-long agreement was made. The loan does not include a buy option, claims Toni Juanmart of Sport. Lenglet’s wages worth €15m will be covered by Villa to the extent of 75%.
Since his return from Tottenham, Barcelona have been looking for a way to get rid of the French center-back. The possibility of returning to Spurs appeared to be on the table. However the departure of Antonio Conte and the appointment of Ange Postecoglou halted those discussions. According to RAC1, Sevilla, Olympique Lyon, and Real Betis also shown interest in signing him, but Aston Villa ultimately prevailed. Thus, the loan deal with Villa will now help Barcelona to fix FFP issues to make room for their other targets,
Latest signing Lenglet might face competition from Pau Torres for his starting spot. Torres and Lenglet will be a huge asset for manager Unai Emery in the upcoming campaign, especially in light of Mings’ injury. Lenglet is good with the ball, has decent athletic ability, and appears to be quite solid in a defensive system that is functioning. Lenglet is preparing to board a flight from Barcelona to Birmingham for his medicals today.
