Arsenal could be in the market for a new midfielder in the January transfer window to increase the squad depth. Meanwhile, the Arsenal boss has also confirmed signing a midfielder before the end of the transfer window.
As things stand, the Gunners are poised to win their first Premier League title after 19 years. However, the lack of depth in the midfield position may cause problems in the latter half of the season.
Mikel Arteta has the likes of Granit Xhaka, Martin Odegaard, Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny, and Albert Sambi Lokonga at their disposal in the midfield. Meanwhile, this season, a thigh injury has largely limited Elneny to just 111 league minutes.
The Egypt international is now dealing with a knee injury. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has shed light on his current condition in the pre-match press conference:
“He had some issues with his knee that we are assessing at the moment and we will have to see how he evolves in the next couple of days. There are concerns, especially because Mo is a player who never complains about anything. But let’s see.”
As a result, The Gunners’ management is ready to cash in for a midfielder with the Premier League title at stake.
Arsenal keeping close tabs on a Premier League midfielder
The Gunners’ management is looking for players who can cover the central midfield area and fit into Arteta’s systems. Even the Spanish tactician spoke about it in the pre-match press conference:
“We need some more cover in midfield ideally if we can. In this market it’s pretty complicated to do that. The most important thing is that we get the performances and the time on the pitch that we need with the players we have available today that are already really good.”
As per various reports, Arsenal might sign Italian midfielder Jorginho from Chelsea. The 31-year-old midfielder has only 6 months of his contract left with Chelsea. Moreover, it seems very unlikely that the midfielder is keen on renewing his contract with the Blues.
Moreover, given the fact that Arteta likes Jorginho’s playing style, Arsenal can sign him at a lower transfer fee. Arsenal is also looking at a potential signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton.
Caicedo also seems to be interested in leaving the club in the January transfer window. However, Chelsea also wants to sign the Ecuadorian international. So, it remains to be seen which midfielder Arsenal might end up signing.
