Onel Hernandez signs for Birmingham City

About Football Express UK

Onel Hernandez has signed for Birmingham on a loan deal from Norwich City in the January transfer window. Onel will spend the rest of the season with the EFL Championship side Birmingham City.

Birmingham was monitoring the 28-year-old winger for a long time. As a result, they grabbed the opportunity to bag the winger in the winter transfer window on a loan deal.

Onel Hernandez started his youth career in Arminia Bielefeld and earned the senior cap with them. He went on to sign a three-and-a-half-year contract for English side Norwich City in 2018.

The Cuban winger has joined the Blues from Premier League outfit Norwich City. He has spent the first half of the season on loan at Middlesbrough.

Hernandez has played 17 Championship games for Boro this season scoring 1 goal. However, he managed to play only two games since Chris Wilder took charge of the club in November. Before that, he had been a regular under their previous manager Neil Warnock.

The Cuban international can play in a variety of positions on the left flank and also upfront. He scored his first goals for the Canaries against the Blues, on the first day of the 2018/2019 season.

He went on to play 97 games with Norwich netting 9 goals as the Canaries were eventually promoted to the top flight.

Verdict of the signing

The signing seems to be beneficial for both sides, as Hernandez can expect more game-time. Speaking to BluesTV, the player expressed his excitement on signing for Birmingham and spoke about his goals.

“I’m delighted to be here. Birmingham is a big club, a big city. There was not much to think about for me, and I had a really good conversation with the Gaffer beforehand.

“I am here to try to help, to score goals and to develop my game.

I have played in the Championship for three years now. It is very competitive but I think over the last few years I have picked up good experience, but I want to continue improving.”

On the other hand, Birmingham can use his experience to get good results and climb up to the league table. As a result, it is a good signing taking everything into consideration.
