Chelsea transfer roundup: Search for left-back continues for the Blues

About Football Express UK

Chelsea has been looking forward to signing players to cover certain positions as their surge for the title continues. However, The Blues appeared to have a very settled squad at the start of the season. So, the prospect of a January window full of rumours was not in the plans.

However, some injuries to key players in important positions forced the Blues to look for options. The ACL injury of in-form Ben Chilwell forced them to look for a left-back in this transfer window. Moreover, a furiously-paced title race means the Blues has to do some business in the mid-season window to boost the squad.

However, the European champions are also looking forward to selling some of its players to fund the signings. So, let’s dive into the probable arrivals and departures that are linked with Chelsea FC.

Probable signings

Ryan Bertrand:

Leicester City‘s left-back has been linked to a probable return to his former club by various sources. However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, speculation linking Ryan Bertrand with a return to Chelsea is wide of the mark.

The left-back moved Southampton to Leicester City in the summer. However, he is struggling to get regular minutes for the Foxes.

As a result, a possible move back to Chelsea has been linked. The Blues only have one senior left-back available in the form of Marcos Alonso.

Lucas Digne:

Chelsea was heavily linked to sign Lucas Digne after his fallout with the manager took place. The management seemed interested to sell the French left-back permanently.

However, it’s been reported that Chelsea was only willing to sign Digne on loan. But Everton rejected the bid as they were interested to sell the player permanently. As a result, this potentially paved the path for him to move to Aston Villa on a permanent deal.

In an interview with Birmingham Live, Tuchel praised Aston Villa’s transfer signings.

“I don’t know if I have a good answer to this one.

I have the feeling that Villa is very busy and finding good opportunities to strengthen their squad. Other teams are actually maybe pretty happy with what they have. We, in general, are very happy.”

Gleison Bremer:

Chelsea is looking forward to signing a central defender. Both Christiansen and Rudiger are not extending their contract and this has forced the Blues to look for a central defender.

Gleison Bremer has enjoyed a fantastic season in Serie A for Torino. The 24-years-old Brazilian is linked with the Blues in case Rudiger decides to leave the club.

Probable Departures

Malang Sarr:

As per reports, AC Milan is heavily linked to sign Sarr in this transfer window. The Italian giants are short of centre-backs as Simon Kjaer is set to miss the rest of the season through injury.

As a result, they are expected to target a centre-back in the current window and Sarr is said to be the alternative.

Sarr has featured primarily in cup competitions for the Blues this season and has made just one start in the Premier League.

Hakim Ziyech:

Various reports claimed that Hakim Ziyech was linked to a move to FC Barcelona if the Ferran Torres move failed. However, Chelsea is still looking for buyers as the footballer is struggling to find his form.

He signed for the Blues in 2020 for approximately $50m but has miserably failed to impress the management. He has managed to score 3 goals in the 33 matches he played for the Blues.

Saul:

Saul arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2020. However, his arrival has been nothing short of a disaster. The Spaniard has been disappointing every time he has appeared on the pitch.

His loan spell is expected to be cut short in January. Meanwhile, the Blues would head back into the market to replace him.
