Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Olympique Lyonnais defender Joachim Andersen, as per the report in Foot Mercato. The defender spent an impressive loan spell with Fulham last season but failed to keep the club in the top-flight.
The 25-year-old made 31 appearances for the Cottagers, scoring one goal and notching one assist. The defender also contributed to achieving nine clean sheets for Scott Parker’s side.
On the back of a promising season, the Denmark international was called up to the national squad for Euro 2020. Andersen made three appearances in the competition and all were off the bench. They had a great run in the competition up to the semi-final after failing to register a single point in the first two games.
Manchester United are looking for a World-class defender to partner with Harry Maguire. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane. However, they have identified the Danish international as a cheaper alternative to the Frenchman.
Will Manchester United go for Joachim Andersen this summer?
According to the French report, Manchester United will have to go head-to-head with Tottenham Hotspur to secure the signature of Joachim Andersen this summer.
The report further claims that the price is around €30 million(£25.8 million) this summer, despite having three more years remaining in the defender’s current contract with Lyon.
Buying a new centre-back should be a priority for Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side conceded 44 goals last season which was way too many for a club that are fighting for the Premier League title.
The Red Devils have bought Jadon Sancho who would be crucial to breaking down the lower defensive blocks. However, to play against a deep line defences United will have to play a higher line of defence. And without a real pace at the back Solskjaer’s side conceded quite a few in transition last season.
So, the Red Devils have identified Varane to complement Maguire for next season. However, if they fail to secure the signature of the World Cup winner then Joachim Andersen will be a very good alternative to the Frenchman for Manchester United.
