Kyle Walker was reportedly ready to leave Manchester City for boyhood club Sheffield United this summer, but the deal fell through.
The right-back was recently elected club captain just days after signing a two-year contract extension with the Etihad club,
It has only just been revealed just how close Walker was to leaving the club in the summer.
Reports in both England and Germany had suggested that Walker was a main target for Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel during the summer transfer window,
With Walker 33-years-old and in the final 12 months of his Manchester City contract,
It looked like the stars were aligning for him to ride off into sunset after helping the Blues to their treble triumph.
In the end however, Walker remained in east Manchester and committed the remaining peak years of his career to Pep Guardiola’s side
However, Bayern was not the only potential destination for the veteran defender TEAMtalk has revealed.
Kyle Walker almost left the club
According to their report, Walker was ‘more than willing’ to leave Manchester City to join his boyhood club Sheffield United,
Where he made just two senior appearances as a youngster in late 2000s.
While Walker appears to have had a handful of options this summer,
The report suggests that Bramall Lane preferred destination had the newly promoted club
They have not been able to put together a package worthy enough of bringing the five-time Premier League winning defender back home.
The deal reportedly hinged on a potential takeover of the Yorkshire club,
Which would have aided in their ability to finance a deal for Walker.
However, the takeover did not materialise
The Blades remained on a shoestring budget despite a big payout after gaining promotion back to the top-flight in the summer.
It now looks like Walker will finish his career in the City shirt and with the captain’s armband
After Ilkay Gundogan’s departure in the summer, and for now remains a key cog in Pep Guardiola’s solid rearguard.
After six games in the Premier League this season, City remain perfect and sit top of the table
They search for a record fourth consecutive title, and a sixth in seven years.
