Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has revealed after the Copa America 2021 final triumph that Lionel Messi played the semi-final and final with a hamstring injury.
La Albiceleste have won their first major trophy in almost 30 years after overcoming Brazil in the Copa America final. Despite reaching the final of this competition in 2015 and 2016, Messi failed to take his team over the finishing line. This time the little man who is smiling at the end of the final and managed to lift his first trophy with Argentina.
Angel Di Maria gave the lead to Lionel Scaloni’s side midway through the first half. But, Brazil could not get past the defensive structure of Argentina. La Albiceleste’s defence was the point of concern before coming into this competition. And their display throughout the tournament will give huge beliefs to the fans for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022.
Messi played the semi-final and final with a hamstring injury:
Speaking to the media in the post-match press conference, the Argentine manager revealed that Messi played the semi-final against Colombia and the final against Brazil with an injury to his hamstring. He said:
“Lionel Messi played against Colombia and Brazil with hamstring problems.”
It will be interesting to see how far the hamstring injury has worsened after playing two ninety minutes games. The hamstring injury is one of the most daunting injuries for a footballer. And playing with it for consecutive two games could cause big damage. So, the situation of the injury could be concerning for Barcelona management.
Messi picked up an ankle injury as well during the game against Colombia. In the TV camera, the bloodstains were clearly visible. The same thing happened with Argentina right-back Gonzalo Montiel. His sock drenched in blood as well in the ankle area.
The international trophy triumph will solidify Messi’s position as the GOAT. The Copa America victory will make Messi a legend in Argentina. He has been heavily criticised in Argentina for the nation’s failures in recent years. And this victory will wipe out those doubts.
