History

The EFL Championship was founded in 2004 when the former first division of the Football League was rebranded. Meanwhile, the top two teams at the end of the season were promoted to the Premier League. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-placed teams qualify for the playoffs, with the winner also being promoted.
