Arsenal on the lookout for Amadou Onana after FFP advantage

Arsenal

Arsenal received a positive development in their transfer plans on Monday. Since they did not receive charges by the Premier League for avoiding profit and sustainability rules (PSRs). These regulations serve as the domestic equivalent of financial fair play (FFP). And thus have gained increased significance over the past 12 months.

For Arsenal, the timing of avoiding possible punishment is advantageous. While the absence of a major surprise in avoiding punishment is notable, the mere threat of it had suppressed their January transfer plans. After three years of substantial spending and minimal outgoings, this development provides Arsenal with an opportunity. That is to potentially exploit the situation among their fellow clubs.

Arsenal’s interest is particularly focused on Amadou Onana, the midfield partner of Thomas Partey. The club is reportedly monitoring Onana as they seek to reinforce their midfield with added strength. There is a perceived need for additional support in the midfield. With Declan Rice also factoring into the considerations.

How essential is Amadou Onana to Arsenal?

Fabio Vieira has not been able to contribute significantly since his arrival, and Kai Havertz is appearing less like a midfielder as time progresses. Martin Odegaard can fill in as a No.8, but deploying two players who don’t contribute much defensively poses risks. Jorginho, on the other hand, may not fulfill the desired defensive duties even though he occupies the space in the midfield.

Amadou Onana stands out as a dynamic defensive midfielder who can bring quality, physicality, and ball progression skills to the team. The £50 million price tag associated with him has been a hindrance, particularly in the mid-season transfer window. However, changes in Everton’s latest financial position could potentially alter the dynamics surrounding Onana’s potential move.

The timing appears opportune for Arsenal. If funds can be generated, potentially through the sale of academy graduates like Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson, and Emile Smith Rowe, a deal for Onana becomes highly feasible. This approach aligns with the club’s strategy.
