Arsenal could make surprising move for Marc Cucurella in january

Arsenal

After a difficult evening against Liverpool, Arsenal fans seem fairly unanimous in their desire for Mikel Arteta to recruit new players in January.

As well as damaging their title aspirations,

Arsenal have now crashed out of an important cup competition after three defeats in a row.

There’s been a common theme in the three losses, a total lack of confidence in front of goal.

However, it seems as if Mikel Arteta will still prioritise a defensive recruitment for his Arsenal team in January.

And with that said, some quite surprising news has now emerged.

Via journalist Simon Phillips, Arsenal are now said to be interested in signing Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella this month.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team want Marc Cucurella in January

The Chelsea journalist said he had heard whispers of a potential move to Arsenal, even if it may be difficult in January.

Phillips said: “I’m still hearing that the most likely scenario is that we wait until the summer to sign a new left back, but something could develop with Marc Cucurella.

“I’ve heard some whispers last week of a potential move to Arsenal bubbling up, nothing solid yet..

“But the problem is his injury, so that could make any move this month difficult.

“Chelsea are open to selling him now, and he will definitely be up for sale in the summer.”

Should that move ever develop to more than just a whisper, it would surely be incredibly controversial.

Arsenal don’t have the best track record of recruiting players from Chelsea,

With Kai Havertz and Jorginho still struggling to fully justify their moves.

And the less said about the players that made the switch before them, the better.

Although Arsenal are lacking a full-back or two right now, £62m Cucurella simply doesn’t seem like a logical answer.

Perhaps a loan move could suit both parties, but even then fans may wish for Arsenal to be more ambitious.

The January transfer window is now a very difficult one for Mikel Arteta to get right at Arsenal – their situation has suddenly changed.

And whilst they won’t want a knee-jerk reaction, it seems as if it would be a perilous decision not to strengthen at all this month.

That being said, one Gunners player has now been made available for £30m.
