Aston Villa to seal third transfer as they look to sign Olsen on permanent deal

About Football Express UK

Aston Villa are not messing around with their summer transfer window plans. The Midlands club under their new manager Steven Gerrard are planning huge for next season. Moreover, Gerrard has made it clear that he wants to fight for European places with Villa. Therefore, the club needs to back him up in the transfer market to help him fight for his goals. And as a result, Villa have already got down to business with their transfers. Aston Villa are now looking to sign goalkeeper Robin Olsen on a permanent deal. The 32-year-old is currently on loan from the Italian side AS Roma.

Olsen joined Aston Villa in January after terminating his loan with Sheffield United. The ‘keeper had signed for the Championship side last summer. Villa then approached the 32-year-old in January and the move worked out as the club welcomed a total of four players in the month. Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne, and Calum Chambers were singed in the winter market.

Aston Villa wants the experienced Olsen as Martinez’s backup

Aston Villa are making quick calls under Steven Gerrard. The club had landed Coutinho on loan from Barcelona and last month made his deal permanent. The Villans triggered the £17 million buy clause in Coutinho’s loan deal. And recently, the club completed another transfer as they acquired the talented defender Boubacar Kamara from Marseille. Villa signed the 22-year-old center-back for free on a five-year deal.

Now Aston Villa wants Olsen to be their third signing for the summer by keeping him beyond his loan spell. The Swede’s contract with Roma runs through the summer of 2023 but could leave them this year for Villa. Moreover, Roma have reportedly included a buy option in his loan deal with Villa for £3 million. The Midlands club are ready to trigger the same and sign Olsen.

Though Olsen has made only one appearance for Aston Villa this season, Gerrard seems to be impressed with the January signing. Olsen only played in the final of the Premier League, making his debut for Villa against Manchester City. However, he still has a decent experience of playing in England. Olsen featured in 11 games for Sheffield United in the Championship before joining Aston Villa.

Moreover, Olsen spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Everton from Roma. He played 11 games for the Toffees as well, with 7 out of it coming in the Premier League. Furthermore, Olsen brings the experience of playing in European competitions to the table as well. The ‘keeper has an impressive 18 Champions League, and 12 Europa League games under his belt. Gerrard will certainly benefit from having a ‘keeper who has plied his trade in Europe’s elite competitions.
