Tottenham is plotting a surprise if Manchester United completes a trade

Harry Kane has served as Tottenham talisman and still does. The famous Jimmy Greaves, who was the club’s all-time leading scorer, was just overtaken by the 29-year-old.

Kane is the epitome of a complete center-forward and, as such, is frequently mentioned in connection with mega-moves every summer.

In 2021, he was on the verge of joining Man City. But repeated offers in excess of £100 million fell short of convincing Daniel Levy to accept them.

The future of Kane is a subject of debate for Tottenham as the current season goes on. His current contract is set to expire in 2024.

It’s commonly known that he wanted to supplement his own honours with silverware. That goes for his desire to continue challenging himself in the Champions League. A competition Spurs are battling mightily to just get into next season.

Man Utd is one team that has a higher chance of achieving both of those goals. Erik ten Hag’s top two targets for the summer, according to The Telegraph, are Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. Both are anticipated to cost more than £100 million.

Kane’s transfer to a domestic competitor is strongly opposed by Tottenham. If Kane doesn’t sign new terms and Spurs are forced to sell, they’d much rather sell to a foreign team, like Bayern Munich.

Even Bayern, by far the largest team in Germany, cannot match the financial clout of England’s powerhouses. Kane leaving for Manchester United is thus still a very serious possibility.

Now, a report from Spain claims that Tottenham has lined up a surprise target for Chelsea to replace Kane in the event that he is taken.

Will Romelu Lukaku replace Harry Kane at Tottenham?

Romelu Lukaku, the Blues mystic, is the target of Spurs, according to the Spanish source cited by both Goal and Caught Offside.

The 29-year-old cost an incredible £97.5 million to acquire in the summer of 2021, but his performance at Stamford Bridge was underwhelming.

The Belgian was later loaned back to his former club Inter Milan for a cost of £8 million, but he is struggling once more. Tottenham want him.

Only four goals have been scored by Lukaku in 14 matches for the Nerazzurri so far. Due to many injuries and worries about his fitness and conditioning, his playing time has been limited.

Indeed, on the subject of why Lukaku is regularly benched by manager Simone Inzaghi, Inter CEO, Beppe Marotta, recently said (via Fabrizio Romano): “Why Lukaku on the bench? Romelu has 103kg to carry on his shoulders, he must be physically fit.”

“It’s not yet 100 percent fit, he’s getting back to the best form. We expect Romelu to do great things in the second part of the season.”

Conte can truly change Romelu Lukaku’s game

Yet Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte is the one manager in all of football who truly understands how to bring the best out of Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku’s stellar two-year stay at Inter earned him a £97.5 million transfer to Chelsea.

At the time, Lukaku had 95 games under Conte’s management, scoring 64 goals and dishing out 16 assists. With Conte in charge and Lukaku leading the attack, Inter won the Serie A championship in 2019–20. That too for the first time in more than a decade.

There have been rumours that Inter will purchase Lukaku from Chelsea after his loan period is over. Nevertheless, Inter are in financial trouble, so it’s unclear whether they’ll be able to pay the kind of fee Chelsea will demand.

Add Caught Offside At the end of the season, Lukaku is “eager” to permanently depart Chelsea. He’s obviously prepared to put an end to his aborted attempt to return to Stamford Bridge.

His preferred option, according to Goal, is a permanent move to Inter. But if Kane leaves, Tottenham will try to bring him back to the Premier League.’

Although it would be difficult to replace a player with Kane’s versatility, a Conte-managed Lukaku might be a competitive alternative.

Spurs continue to hold out hope that Kane will commit to north London for the long term. This would eliminate the need to purchase Lukaku.
