Struggling season for Konsa at Villa

Unai Emery Aston Villa Premier League

Ezri Konsa has had a wayward season so far at Villa Park. The central defender has been abysmal as compared to his usual standards. He has been one of the poorest performers for Aston Villa in recent times.

Aston Villa’s season has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. The Midlands club sacked Dean Smith after a run of five consecutive defeats and appointed former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard in November.

Since Gerrard’s appointment, things are starting to look promising but still not optimum. The Villans have 5 wins, 2 draws and 6 defeats under the new manager so far. And only one win in their last seven games now. Far from pleasant at the moment.

One player has been particularly highlighted and someone who’s not had the best of seasons so far. That would be central defender Ezri Konsa.

With 21 league appearances under his belt, the centre-back has only managed to earn himself a rather underwhelming overall performance rating of 6.44/10 from WhoScored, making him the lowest-rated player currently in Gerrard’s squad that has started more than two league games.

AN UNDERPERFORMING KONSA

Looking at his defensive statistics, the 24-year-old, who has lost 35 duels this season, has only been able to achieve an average of one tackle per game, which is lower than the likes of Emi Buendia, Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Sanson.

The same can be said for his average of interceptions as well with just 0.6 made per game, the same number as Ashley Young and Axel Tuanzebe who have both played significantly fewer minutes than Konsa.

Even for clearances and blocks, the Englishman has not been able to match the same average as fellow centre-back Tyrone Mings. Even though the 28-year-old is seen as a liability for Villa by 66% of voters in a poll ran by Football FanCast earlier this year.

Konsa was sent off in the 3-3 draw against Leeds and some would go as far as saying that he’s been a liability this season. That is shocking for someone who has been labelled as “Mr Consistent” before.

With Calum Chambers joining the club in January and links to Liverpool man Joe Gomez. Villa is looking for replacements already. Konsa will have to improve his performances if he wants to remain at the club next season. If Gerrard doesn’t believe in him then that could be the end of the road for him at Villa Park.
