Newcastle United are eyeing to make multiple signings in the transfer market under new manager Eddie Howe. Moreover, after Howe accomplished a brilliant turnaround last season, the Magpies are ready to back him in the market. Public Investment Fund of Saudi, Newcastle’s massive rich owners have made huge funds available as well for their manager. As a result, Howe has readied a list of potential targets he wants for next season. And according to Sky Sports, Watford winger Ismaila Sarr is included by Newcastle in the list.
Howe wants to add a new winger to his squad and has requested the signing of Moussa Diaby. The Bayer Leverkusen winger has attracted the Magpies’ interest after delivering a staggering number in back-to-back seasons for the Bundesliga side. Furthermore, Howe wants to replace his 28-year-old winger Ryan Fraser, who has failed to live up to the expectations at Saint James’ Park. However, Newcastle have wish-listed Ismaila Sarr in case they fail to strike a deal for Diaby.
Newcastle considers Sarr a cheap alternative to Diaby
Newcastle reportedly prefers Diaby who has racked impressive stats at Leverkusen since joining them from PSG. The winger had scored 10 goals and assisted 15 in the 2020/21 season in 43 games in all competitions for Leverkusen. Moreover, Diaby netted 17 goals and further assisted 14 last season, making it two consecutive seasons with double digits in both goals and assists. Howe wasted no time in demanding Diaby’s signing, but financial aspects could force Newcastle to go for Sarr.
Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth claims that Ismaila Sarr has now emerged as a potential target for Newcastle. Sarr is no new to the Premier League and has a lot of experience playing at a high level. The winger has spent two seasons in the English top-flight with Watford, making 50 appearances. Sarr has bagged 10 goals and 8 assists in those 50 games.
Though Diaby outshines Sarr according to the numbers, Newcastle could still snap up the Watford winger. While Diaby’s market value stands at £54 million (transfermarkt), Leverkusen would demand a higher fee if they are to part ways with the 22-year-old. Moreover, since Diaby has 3 more years left on his current deal, it seems highly unlikely he joins the Magpies.
On the other hand, while Sarr has a market value of £24.3 million (transfermarkt) Newcastle are aware that Watford could settle for £30 million. However, Sheth claims that Diaby remains their top priority before they go for Sarr. Nonetheless, Sarr’s colleague Ben Foster has already labeled his talent as “freaky“, which further speaks volumes for the winger. Meanwhile, Newcastle are currently closing a deal for Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope and will then turn towards buying a winger.
