Liverpool player ratings for 1-0 win over Newcastle United

Liverpool Manuel

Liverpool end Newcastle United‘s unbeaten run at St James’ Park as they secure a 1-0 victory to keep their quadruple dreams alive for the rest of the season.

Newcastle United took the game to Liverpool in the early part of the game and started the game on the front foot. But Liverpool came close on the other end with an effort from Diego Jota. Virgil van Dijk also had the chance to open the scoring from a corner but he steered his header over the bar.

But the visitors did take the lead in the 19th minute through Naby Keita. Naby Keita wiggles his way through defenders and tackles to get the ball in the back of the net. Miguel Almiron did have the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out because of offside.

Newcastle began the second half brightly yet again. But were unable to test Allison yet again. While at the other end Mane should have put the visitors 2-0 up but he could not convert. Mo Salah went through 1 on 1 late on but a last-ditch challenge from Jamaal Lascelles denied him the opportunity.

Liverpool player ratings

Alisson Becker 7

Had next to nothing to do in the whole game, but he did play some good passes out of defence.

Joe Gomez 9

Not quite as attacking as the man he replaced in the starting lineup. But he looked very comfortable in possession and did very well up against Saint-Maximin.

Joel Matip 7

Matip was solid in the heart of the defence and stepped out of his line when required.

Virgil van Dijk 7

Gave the Newcastle United frontline nothing to feed upon and had a brilliant game.

Andy Robertson 8

Ran his socks off yet again and was on top form defensively and going forward.

Jordan Henderson 7

Henderson put in a fantastic cross for Jota in the first half from the deep. He kept moving possession on very calmly and subbed off in the second half.

James Milner 8

The 36-year-old showed plenty of energy in the middle of the park and made some crunching tackles.

Naby Keita 9

Scored the only goal in the game. Keita played some fantastic passes and made some key tackles and interceptions late on.

Luis Diaz 8

Diaz’s touch was top class yet again and he danced around Matt Target at times down the right flank.

Sadio Mane 6

Mane came into the game in good goal scoring form but he could not have any real impact on the tie and missed a chance to score in the second half.

Diogo Jota 7

Jota had a header saved by Dubravka in the first half. He did grab the assist for the Keita goal.
