Former West Ham player believes Jesse Lingard will join Hammers

About Football Express UK

Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Jesse Lingard would join West Ham United this January if he had the chance. The former Aston Villa player however thinks that Manchester United might not be ready to sell to a “direct rival”.

Agbonlahor was speaking to talkSPORT about Jesse Lingard and a potential move to West Ham United. Lingard will see his contract end with Manchester United this summer. Currently, the Red Devils are trying to sell him in January to avoid losing him for free six months later.

While Jesse Lingard is on the market, a move to West Ham seem to be very unlikely in January. Manchester United will not want to sell to a side they are competing for the Champions League places with. Apart from West Ham, Newcastle United have been linked with the 29-year-old in this transfer window.

JESSE NOT TO BE OFFERED TO WEST HAM UNITED

“I don’t think he’ll go to West Ham this window. I think he would go (if he had the choice). West Ham would take him. But I don’t think Man United would pass him over to a rival for the top four.”

– said Gabriel Agbonlahor about Jesse Lingard.

Jesse Lingard is again not having much luck with Manchester United. The England attacking midfielder is not getting enough playing time with the Red Devils, having played only 88 minutes in the Premier League this season.

This is despite Lingard showing his quality last season during his half a season loan at West Ham United. During that shot spell, he appeared 16 times for the Hammers in the Premier League. Jesse Lingard scored 9 goals and assisted 5 during the spell, helping West Ham to qualify for the Europa League.

NEWCASTLE UNITED A POSSIBLE OPTION

However, the player decided to stay in Manchester United at the end of last season in hopes of getting more playtime. This did not go according to plan and since the contract talks between Lingard and Manchester United have not progressed.

It is now sure that the 29-year-old will leave Manchester in the summer. Red Devils are hoping to cash in on him this January itself. But this does not seem to be working in their favour as no deals have been made yet.

Newcastle is reportedly very interested in the player, however, talks seem to collapse over big demands from the Manchester United side. West Ham United seem to be waiting for the summer to convince Lingard to sign him for free, while reports also suggest the player is open to a move to other clubs as well.

There is still time for deals to happen as the deadline for the winter windows will close on the 31st of January. For Manchester United, selling to West Ham will be an issue with both sides fighting for 4th place in the league. As for Lingard, the player will be looking for a move in January and if it does not happen will assess his options in the summer.
