The Netherlands international defender Daley Blind has inked a six-month deal with Bayern Munich, adding top experience and talent to the Bundesliga champions’ team.
Blind, who will turn 33 in March, departs Ajax and joins Bayern. They agreed to mutually end his contract in late December. He will provide head coach Julian Nagelsmann with another centre back option after Lucas Hernandez sustained a season-ending injury at the World Cup. The former Manchester United player will team up with fellow countryman Matthijs de Ligt and international Dayot Upamecano. He is capable of playing at left-back too like Hernandez, and shields Alphonso Davies although Blind will play at the heart of defence at Bayern.
Daley Blind’s thoughts on joining Bayern Munich
“I’m very excited to play here,”
added Blind, who will join Bayern this season in his 500th senior career appearance.
He has a contract that extends through the conclusion of the 2022–23 season.
“Coming up is the most crucial period of the season, when titles will be decided. A team like Bayern may win every trophy. My choice was mostly influenced by the club’s desire for titles. I hope my experience will benefit the team. I’ll do all it takes for Bayern Munich”.
Daley Blind started every one of the Netherlands’ World Cup games in Qatar before he signed for Bayern Munich. Prior to De Oranje’s thrilling quarterfinal loss to eventual champions Argentina, Blind had made 99 international appearances in total.
One of just a select few signings over the past ten years who can boast that is his immaculate approach both on and off the field. At the centre of Van Gaal’s defence, Blind and Chris Smalling developed a strong partnership. This partnership helped United win the FA Cup in 2016 after defeating Crystal Palace at Wembley. However, The next summer Jose Mourinho replaced Van Gaal as the team’s manager. Mourinho’s style of play didn’t quite align with Blind’s qualities. which led to him leaving Manchester to return to Ajax in 2018.
Blind had a cardioverter defibrillator after being diagnosed with myocarditis.
The fact that Blind is still competing at the highest level of football is a testimony to his professionalism. Nevertheless, the Dutchman’s journey has been motivating to say the least.
