Premier League: Manchester City may lose points or be kicked out

The alleged violations have occurred between the 2009–10 season and the 2017–18 season. Premier League statement to Manchester City

The statement from the Premier League concluded:

“The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private. Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission’s final award will published on the Premier League’s website.”

“This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”

If an alleged violation or multiple violations found, a commission may impose sanctions under Premier League Regulation W.51. However, these include a warning or even a proposal to the league to expel a team from the league.

Furthermore, respondents have the ability to appeal. And the commission has the authority to condition such punishments on specific measures being done within a specific time frame. Murray Rosen KC, appointed in 2020, serves as the independent Premier League judicial panel’s chair.

He will now decide who will join him on a commission to look into the purported rule violations. The panel also has access to other impartial financial and legal professionals for consultation.

City issued a statement which read: “Manchester City FC surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter put to rest once and for all.”
