Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard won his first match against Brighton. The Villans won the match after two late goals which were scored at the end of the match.

 Aston Villa broke the deadlock in the 84th minute and 88th minute. Ollie Watkins scored an excellent goal in the 84th minute whereas centre back Mings scored in the 88th minute.

Villa had more chances but the players could not utilise all of them. Matty Cash had the first big chance but Brighton keeper Steele saved his header.

Brighton was settling into the game in the first half. They even dominated Villa and created two big chances. Emi Martinez stopped two shots and one of them was an excellent save against Tariq Lamptey.

Steven Gerrard made proper use of his on-field players as well as his substitutes. He brought on Danny Ings for Leon Bailey and Ashley Young for Emi Buendia. It was a frustrating night for Buendia who only played 20 minutes but his replacement changed the game.

Young’s substitution changed the match entirely; he burst onto the scene with 8 minutes left. Ashley’s brilliantly weighted pass provided Watkins with an opportunity to score against Brighton.

“A mixture of excitement, relief, pride. Because I can’t be any more proud of the players. Some were only around for a couple of days in the week, everything we asked them to do in the main they followed the structure and delivered a really good performance in the end.”

Brighton manager Graham Potter’s comments after the match.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win, but ultimately we didn’t score.”

“I thought we created the better chances in a game of relatively few chances. They were hard to play against, hard to beat, and kept working, as you’d expect on the first day with a new manager. I think we created some decent chances.”
