Manchester United have shown interest in Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves. Neves has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League the last couple of seasons. United on the other hand does not have the service of a decent defensive midfielder.
Manchester United have had a terrible season this time around despite adding Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo into the mix. They end the season finishing 6th with 58 points, with a zero goal difference.
United’s problems
United’s problems were mostly due to a couple of reasons. One, United switched tactics in the 2021/22 season. United used to employ a counter-attacking style which favored them as they finished second in the 2020/21 season. However, the addition of Ronaldo and Sancho meant they had to switch styles into a possession-based style. Although Ronaldo and Sancho used to play in a possession-based environment, The other members of the squad had been playing in a counter-attacking environment. The sudden switch of tactics was too much and they had a loss of form. Moreover, constant injuries in the squad throughout the season did not help their cause.
Two, United did not have a good defensive midfielder ever since Ander Herrera left the club. While they had the services of Matic, he was aging and is on his last legs. This meant United had to play a double pivot with Fred and McTominay. While Fred had a slump in the early stages, He quickly became one of the best players in the squad. On the other hand, McTominay had a terrible season.
United intend to solve their problem with the help of Ruben Neves. A holding midfielder can easily help in the transition between Attack and Defense. United will be happy knowing that Neves wants the Old Trafford move as well.
