Saul Niguez would leave Atletico, says coach Simeone

About Football Express UK

Saul Niguez might be heading away from Atletico Madrid as per the current head coach Diego Simeone. Although his side fought hard and won the La Liga last season, lack of playing time was a small concern.

After playing in the club for almost a decade, the 26-year-old midfielder is keen on a new challenge. He is currently linked with clubs like rivals Barcelona as well as English clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea. Rojiblancos have signed Rodrigo de Paul from Serie A club Udinese recently. Thus, there would be a bit of competition for him.

Although he has five more years left in his contract, he might be departing Wanda Metropolitano.

The door will be open in the best way for Saul Niguez

Saul joined Atletico from the second team, Atletico Madrid B during the 2013-14 season. Since then, he has scored 43 goals and 19 assists in 337 appearances.

In 2016, he even made his debut for Spain and has earned 19 call-ups scoring three goals so far. However, he wasn’t called up for the Euro 2020 campaign due to his poor run of form and lack of playing time.

With media outlet AS, he spoke about the player and his wish to depart from Atletico. Simeone said,

“He is very important for Atletico because he can play as a full-back, right-wing, midfielder. He is a player who, in that version and playing how the coach needs him to, performs very well.”

Saul has turned out into a versatile player and that is what the manager wants him to stay at the club. Even though he might consider a swap deal with Barcelona’s Antoine Griezmann, a move to the Premier League looks more certain.

According to AS, Liverpool and Manchester United are believed to be the frontrunners to sign him. The Red Devils were earlier interested and would like to succeed this time around. Whereas for Jurgen Klopp’s side, a midfield duo of Saul and Thiago would be a match made in heaven!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side earlier completed the deal for Jadon Sancho and shortly, the deal with Raphael Varane might be completed. However, Saul would be the perfect midfielder they would need right now as Donny van de Beek hasn’t impressed much at Old Trafford.
