Manchester United 1-0 Wolves Post Match Analysis

Wolverhampton Wanderers - Wolves FC

Wolves hosted Manchester United last week. Manchester United won the match by 1-0 with Mason Greenwood scoring the winning goal in the 80th minute. The goal came with a lot of controversy with the incident between Paul Pogba and Ruben Neves. The referee had played advantage following the challenge by Paul Pogba while neves were on the ground. During the advantage is when the goal by Mason Greenwood had scored which was the only one in the game. It must be said that while Manchester United has more possession of the ball. The game has been dominated massively by Wolves which could be seen in the total number of shots taken.

Against Tottenham, the Wolves were the more dominating team but had not been clinical enough to score their chances in front of goal. In their previous match, the Wolves had lost due to the penalty scored by Deli Ali. Since the second had the team had played super defensively and this style is what Manchester used to their benefit as well. After the goal, Manchester dropped into a deep block that couldn’t be broken apart by the Wolves.

During this game, one player stole the spotlight for themselves. It wasn’t Jadon Sancho who had made his first start in the EPL for Manchester United. It was Adama Traore. In the game, he made 8 successful dribbles, 4 key passes and had an 85% pass accuracy. During the game, it could be seen that each move had the footprint of him in the slightest bit. Adama Traore under Bruno Lage has found a new life. He has been the player to watch for a possible transfer to another club during the winter transfer window.

What did Manchester United Do To Win The Match?

Against Wolves Manchester United deployed their preferred 4-2-3-1 formation with certain changes to benefit them in the attacking half. The backline consisted of the centre back pairing of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire. With Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the fullbacks and David De Gea in Goal. The Midfield pivot consisted of Fred and Paul Pogba with Matic being swapped. The attacking trio consisted of Daniel James, Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho with Mason Greenwood as the striker. Similar to the last match, each Manchester united defender made more passes than any of the attackers. They had also deployed a higher defensive line while rotating the ball within their players. Manchester United did have 3 shots on target while Wolves did have 6.     Manchester United during this game had only one big chance which they did convert.

It must be said that a club with the talents like Jadon Sancho, Pogba paul and Bruno Fernandes being dominated in attacking stats is unheard of. One must question the tactics as well as the player management by the club. With players of such high potentials and wages, the expectation from such a club are for them to win each game with ease. Unless they face a team of similar strength. With Cristiano Ronaldo resigning from the club and joining the team next match. Manchester United will need to win that match with ease. Else their hopes to win the title will be squashed before it even starts.
