Euro 2020: Germany 2-2 Hungary Post-Match Analysis

Germany were held 2-2 by Hungary in the ‘Group of Death’ of Euro 2020. Adam Szalai and Andras Schafer scored for the Hungarians whereas Germans fought back with goals from Kai Havertz and Leon Goretzka.

Surprisingly, the other fixture between other group members, France and Portugal also ended as 2-2 draws. However, Germany finished in second place after the draw. Whereas, Hungary are eliminated from the tournament.

Die Mannschaft coach Joachim Low fielded his typical 3-4-2-1 formation. Thomas Muller was left put from the starting 11 and Leroy Sane replaced him.

Whereas, Hungary have an unchanged starting 11 with a defensive 5-3-2 formation.

Germany 2-2 Hungary : Analysis

Despite Germany were dominant throughout the whole match with about 76% possession, they went behind astonishingly in the 11th minute. Adam Szalai broke the deadlock after an awesome header which couldn’t have been saved by two goalkeepers!

And then the tables turned and it seemed Hungarians are through to the knockouts untill the 66th minute. Chelsea youngster Kai Havertz scored the equalizer and thus, the Deutsch were once again back.

However, the joy was shortlived as Schafer helped the Magyars retain their lead and make the contest an joy to watch! It was an instant reaction after the equalizer and they deserved the goal.

But, the Germans had the final laugh as they levelled once again in the 84th minute after a move initiated by Bayern Munich youngster Jamal Musiala and Goretzka finding the breakthrough.

Notable Performances

Joshua Kimmich (7.5/10) – He was superb and was a really hardworking player in the match. Kimmich deservedly won the Man of the Match award after an all-round performance.

Kai Havertz (7/10) – Two goals in two big matches would be surely defining his talent. After winning the Champions League with Chelsea, it many be the time for him to win the Euro 2020!

Peter Gulasci (5/10) – He couldn’t recreate his form in the Bundesliga and the defense was very much disorganized.

Germany face England in the Round of 16 match on 29th June at Wembley. Will Havertz led his team against the Three Lions towards a convincing victory or will Raheem Sterling be once again be the hero?
