Euro 2020: England 2-1 Denmark Post-Match Analysis

About Football Express UK

England have now only one more match against Italy to lift the European Championship after overcoming Kasper Schmeichel’s Denmark by 2-1. Mikkel Damsgaard scored the opening goal for the Danes but a Simon Kjaer own goal and Harry Kane‘s late goal sent the Three Lions to the title clash!

As a result, England are through to the final of a major competition for the first time since the 1966 World Cup. However, it would be a tough challenge against the Azurris, who are also unbeaten on their road to the final.

On the other hand, Denmark can be absolutely proud of themselves after reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

England 2-1 Denmark : Team News

England coach Gareth Southgate fielded a 4-2-3-1 formation with Harry Kane as the lone striker. He just made a single change introducing Bukayo Saka instead of Jadon Sancho.

Whereas, Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand fielded his typical 3-4-3 formation and an unchanged starting 11.

England 2-1 Denmark : Analysis

England were dominating and were also better in creating opportunities and had 10 attempts on goal. However, they were given a shock as Denmark took an early lead in the 30th minute. Damsgaard made it 1-0 with a superb freekick and thus, England conceded a goal in the entire tournament.

Unfortunately, fortuitous it may be, Simon Kjaer scored the 11th own goal of the tournament and the match was even. Bukayo Saka found Sterling inside the box but Kjaer instead of clearing moved it towards his own net.

Since then, the English were defending brilliantly and Denmark couldn’t capitalize on their chances. The game moved into extra time and Harry Kane finally got a penalty to his name in the 104th minute. And to his surprise, he converted the chance into a goal after a rebound.

Overall, it was a poor defensive display by the Danish defenders and a lack of creativity in the midfield. Only Kasper Schmeichel was the best among the defence. However, Christian Eriksen would be certainly proud of his diligent teammates!

Notable Performances

Harry Kane (8/10) – Another attacking masterclass from England skipper and two more goals would win him the golden boot and (maybe) the Euros 2020!

Bukayo Saka (7.5/10) – The youngster’s energy and ability has been brilliant and the Italians have to find a way to stop him if he plays in the final. His low cross ultimately resulted in Kjaer own goal.

Simon Kjaer (5/10) – The Danish captain didn’t play as per the team’s expectations and was a bit clumsy.
