Aston Villa set to ditch Douglas Luiz in favour of Kalvin Phillips?

About Football Express UK

According to reports, Premier League side Aston Villa are keen to sign Leeds defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Reports also suggest that the Premier League side have named the pricetag for the defensive midfielder head of the summer transfer window.

The England defensive midfielder has missed a major chunk of the season due to the injury and Leeds United have clearly suffered due to his absence. Leeds have been currently drawn back into the relegation battle. The club are currently 17th in the Premier league table just above the drop zone. They have picked up just 34 points from 34 league games so far this term.

Kalvin Phillips has made a total of 19 appearances across all competitions this term. In this time he has recorded one goal and one assist. (stats via Transfermarkt) According to the Mail, Aston Villa and Steven Gerrard are monitoring the defensive midfielder’s situation ahead of the summer transfer window.

The England defensive midfielder has just two years remaining on his current contract with Leeds United. Phillips is set to demand upwards of £100k-per-week to sign a new deal with the club. But the club can’t afford to give the midfield’s salary demands. With the club potentially on the verge of relegation, the club have divided to cash in on the England midfielder. The club have placed a £60 million price tag on the midfielder.

Manchester United also interested in signing Kalvin Phillips

Alongside Aston Villa, Manchester United are also keen to sign the defensive midfielder in the summer. New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has identified the defensive midfielder as a problem area for the club ahead of the summer. The Dutch manager has shown interest in Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice as the potential target ahead of the summer.

Is Kalvin Phillips the perfect deep line midfielder for Aston Villa?

Douglas Luiz currently features in the deepest line of midfield with John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey alongside him on either side. While Douglas Luiz has unquestionable technical ability and set-piece delivery. But there is still a lot left desired in the Brazilain midfielder’s defensive ability.

Phillips has recorded 1.2 interceptions and 2.6 tackles per game in the league this term. The 26-year-old has also recorded 2.3 clearances per 90 in the league this term. (stats via WhoScored) TH England attacking midfielder would certainly provide a very good base to the Aston Villa midfielder and would be a very good signing for the club.
