Aston Villa keen on signing Gerrard’s former player Calvin Bassey: Sky Sports

About Football Express UK

Sky Sports have reported a huge update over Aston Villa’s next target for a summer move. The Midlanders are now pursuing Rangers defender Calvin Bassey for a transfer. Bassey, who has already worked with Steven Gerrard is now wanted by the Aston Villa manager. Moreover, Gerrard wants more reinforcements in the defense after it leaked in 54 goals in the Premier League costing Villa a top-half finish. However, the club has decided to back their manager in the market with signings to improve crucial positions. And though Villa have already completed three deals, the club will go for more with their sights set on Bassey.

Aston Villa are not messing around under their manager Steven Gerrard in the transfer market. Gerrard had already made it clear that he wants to take Villa back to European competitions. The club is now supporting the manager’s ambitions with the signings needed to achieve them. Aston Villa kickstarted their summer plans with the blockbuster signing of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona. Furthermore, the club then sealed deals for midfielder Boubacar Kamara and center-back Diego Carlos. However, Aston Villa are not planning to stop there and now wants to reunite Calvin Bassey and Gerrard.

Bassey is on the radar of Aston Villa for further defensive bolstering

Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has revealed that Aston Villa are now after Calvin Bassey for a summer move. Dorsett has further added that Villa’s ‘spending spree’ is not over yet with Gerrard wanting to strengthen the midfield and central defense. Furthermore, Dorsett also claims that James Tarkowski is another name on Villa’s list. In his piece for Sky Sports Dorsett wrote,

“..Gerrard wants more, particularly at the back, with Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Rangers’ Calvin Bassey key defensive targets.”

Gerrard knows Bassey’s strengths and would be a good move for the Midlanders. Moreover, the left-back has been in scintillating for Rangers, helping them reach the Europa League final this year. Bassey also played a crucial part in Gerrard’s Rangers tenure, winning the Scottish Premiership. However, left-back is not the only position where Bassey plies his trade. The Rangers defender can play at center-back as well. This would provide Gerrard with further options in his backline.

Aston Villa could be left with only one senior left-back in Lucas Digne over the coming weeks. Ashley Young and Matt Targett face uncertain futures at the club leaving Digne as the only available left-back. In such a situation, Bassey could help Aston Villa back up for Digne at the left-back. Furthermore, the Rangers man can also partner up with Tyrone Mings or Diego Carlos at the center-back.

Aston Villa have reportedly provided Steven Gerrard with a war chest of £150 million for new signings. And with Coutinho and Carlos already arriving for a combined fee of £50 million, and Kamara for free Gerrard has still got a lot of funds to spend. Moreover, Calvin Bassey won’t cost Aston Villa a mammoth fee as such and could be another solid signing for cheap. Nonetheless, it is quite evident that Villa are moving in the right direction under Gerrard with their signings till now.
