Arsenal might target midfield reinforcements in William Carvalho

About Football Express UK

Arsenal has come a long way since Mikel Arteta‘s appointment in 2019. They currently stand 5 points clear at the top of the table, an indicator of their progress. Progress came through excellent man management and a competitive environment within the club.

In addition to being a capable tactician and charismatic in front of the camera, Arteta has been ruthless where he needs to be. This has led to the banishment of stars Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from North London. It has also caused the subsequent departures of Lacazette, Sokratis, Mustafi, and Bellerin under his tenure. This has led to the formation of a young, hungry, and competitive Arsenal side with huge potential.

However, one outlier who has remained in the Emirates despite tough times is Granit Xhaka. Despite Attitude problems, constant disciplinary issues, and falling out with fans, Xhaka has stuck with the club. And this season, he has largely redeemed himself.

After a positional shift to a more advanced, box-to-box role, Xhaka has thrived for Arsenal. With consistent performances and winning back the heart of the fans, Xhaka has transformed into one of Arsenal’s best players. Thus, Arsenal should be on the lookout for backups.

Losing either Xhaka or Thomas Partey in their midfield leaves Arsenal significantly weakened. Some reports from Spain suggest that they might target William Carvalho in order to provide this needed depth.

Who is William Carvalho?

Carvalho currently plays for Real Betis. The Portuguese midfielder has a comparable play style to former Arsenal man Matteo Guendouzi. . Guendouzi left the Emirates for Marseille after a bitter falling out. This may provide an opportunity for the Gunners to recruit a similar player with a better character.

He is usually a typical defensive midfielder. Although, he can be used at central midfield or even at center-back. He has solid passing range and accuracy and is known for his physicality and decision-making.

Football writer James Nalton called Carvalho a “machine”. South Korean boss Paulo Bento also considers him extraordinary.

Recruiting Carvalho could thus provide much-needed depth in an area Arsenal is lacking. This could be crucial in their race to secure their first title in 19 years.
