Paul Merson thinks Arsenal’s best player in Lens match was out of position

Arsenal

Arsenal recently defeated French Ligue 1 side RC Lens in a 6 goal victory. The entire team played very well in the match. With 6 different players on the scoresheet, there was no shortage of goals for the Gunners. In the same fixture at away, Arsenal struggled with a 1-2 defeat in France. But this time they were able to defeat the French club and book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Out of all the players, Arsenal legend Paul Merson thinks that the best player on the pitch was Kai Havertz. Despite the German playing out of position, he had a masterclass in the midfield. He also scored a goal for the Gunners to open up the scoring.

Paul Merson on Kai Havertz performance

Speaking to Sky Sports, Paul said,

“Havertz is a confidence player and he’s playing with confidence right now. I thought he was the best player on the pitch tonight. He was elegant, he picked the right passes and made the right decisions. He’s a top player. I don’t think he’s playing in the right position but he’s still a top player.”

Havertz opened the scoring in the 13th minute of the match. The 24 year old had a difficult start to his Arsenal career after his move from Chelsea. But he seems to get better in the role with his fellow squad mates. He has scored in two consecutive games for Arsenal after a late winner against Brentford and now versus Lens. Paul Merson has earlier expressed his opinion saying that he feels the German should be playing in attack instead of in midfield. Wherever he plays, the 24 year old can be great addition to any team he plays for providing chances and occasionally goals.
