Reece James or Trent Alexander-Arnold: Gary Neville’s pick

About Football Express UK

In a recent interview, Manchester United legend and now football pundit Gary Neville picked his favorite amongst Reece James or Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Both the English right-backs faced off against each other in the FA Cup final on Saturday. While Trent Alexander-Arnold’s side came on top on penalties in the final. But there is no denying that both the fullbacks have enjoyed very good individual seasons.

Reece James has made a total of 37 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea this term despite spending time on the sidelines. In this time he has recorded an impressive six goals and eight assists from right wing-back. (stats via Transfermarkt)

While Trent Alexander-Arnold has made a total of 45 appearances across all competitions this term. In this time he has recorded an extraordinary two goals and 19 assists from right-back. (stats via Transfermakt)

Trent Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed a much more successful season trophy-wise as well. Liverpool are still in contention for the Premier League side and have already reached the Champions League final. While Reece James has lost the League and FA Cup final against Liverpool this term.

With the World Cup fast approaching, Gareth Southgate has a very big call to make at the right-back slot. Both Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold have made their qualities known to the England manager over the course of the season. Add in the likes of Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier and you start to see Gareth Southgate’s predicament.

“Trent is far better on the ball.”: Gary Neville

When asked to pick between Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Gary Neville said:

“Trent or Reece? That’s an interesting one, by the way,” “Trent is far better on the ball. He’s better than everyone on the ball. He’s better than most, to be fair. Midfield players and wingers on the ball. But I think Reece James, injury-free for a couple of seasons, could surpass Trent as an all-round fullback. He needs to stay fit for a few seasons. “

“I do think Trent has improved his defending, I would say in the last three to four weeks. He has been a lot more aggressive in getting to the ball. I think, between them both, they are both outstanding. But Trent, at the moment, edges it and Reece has the ability to overtake.”

, he added.
