Arsenal is in search of a right-back and they seemed to have got one in the form of Lamptey. The 20-year old defender is currently in a great run of form with Brighton.
He has played 11 matches in the Premier League for Brighton and has assisted once in this season. A debilitating hamstring injury sidelined Lamptey for almost nine months in the last term. However, the defender has recovered from the issue and looks to be in great shape.
He joined The Seagulls for nearly $3m from Chelsea in 2019 and with his recent performance. He is proving to be one of the best right-backs in the league. Arsenal was keen on Lamptey during his time at Stamford Bridge. They have kept a close eye on the defender ever since.
Mikel Arteta has mainly played Takehiro Tomiyasu at right-back this term. He signed the Japanese from Bologna last summer.
Hector Bellerin was loaned to Real Betis for the season following Tomiyasu’s arrival. The Spaniard is also likely to be sold this summer.
Probability of signing
Lamptey has a contract with Brighton which runs until the summer of 2025. The market value of this player is around $20m. according to Transfermarkt.
As per football journalist Duncan Castles’ view on the situation:
“What you have here is Arsenal, who had an interest in Lamptey when he burst onto the scene before that difficult injury you were referring to. They are looking to sign him again and exploring the parameters of the deal. I think Lamptey is an exceptionally offensive winger. The limitation for him is his height and I think therefore he needs to play in a defense that uses wings or uses wings progressively, ”
“With Brighton, the club’s policy is that if they receive offers from higher status equipment that are attractive to the players, they will not get in the way of the move, assuming the asking price is reached, and that’s what we saw. . with Ben White. They wanted £ 50m for White, Arsenal went through a series of offers before reaching that number, and may be seeing the same scenario with Lamptey, who is under contract until 2025. Brighton will be happy to have discussions while his The price tag for the player is achieved in the final transaction. “
So Brighton might sell the player if Arsenal offers a good amount for him. In any case, the midseason signing of the player can be a real possibility as the Gunners would look to consolidate their right flank.
