Everton has been immediately docked ten points for violating the Premier League‘s financial regulations. Further they might be relegated after getting away every season.

English premier league teams can only lose a maximum of £105 million over a three-year period. But so far an independent commission determined that Everton lost £124.5 million in 2021–2022 alone.

Everton now sits 19th in the standings. Even this was the largest sporting penalty in the history of the contest.

Historically it will be the first time in seventy years after 1951, they will relegate.

Everton were shocked and disappointed

Although league didn’t disclose the details of the club’s alleged violation when it referred an independent commission to Everton in last March.

In that same month, Everton announced a loss of £44.7 million for 2021–22. It was also their fifth consecutive year of financial losses.

In a press release, Everton said:

“The club does not recognise the finding that it failed to act with the utmost good faith. And it does not understand this to have been an allegation made by the Premier League during the course of proceedings.”

“Both the harshness and severity of the sanction imposed by the commission. Those are neither a fair nor a reasonable reflection of the evidence submitted.”

“The club will also monitor with great interest the decisions made in any other cases concerning the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.”

Why the margin of points reduction was so high ?

Explaining why Everton’s points reduction was so high, the commission said:

“Everton’s understandable desire to improve its on-pitch performance (to replace the non-existent midfield, as Mr Moshiri put it in evidence) led it to take chances with its PSR position.”

“Those chances resulted in it exceeding the £105m threshold by £19.5m.”

“The position that Everton finds itself in is of its own making. The excess over the threshold is significant. The consequence is that Everton’s culpability is great.”

“We take into account the fact that Everton’s PSR trend over the relevant four years is positive, but cannot ignore the fact that the failure to comply with the PSR regime was the result of Everton irresponsibly taking a chance that things would turn out positively.”

“We take into account the fact that Everton’s PSR trend over the relevant four years is positive, but cannot ignore the fact that the failure to comply with the PSR regime was the result of Everton irresponsibly taking a chance that things would turn out positively.”

The commission finally caimed that Everton’s “mismanagement” was the reason behind of this drama.

Merseyside club had 14 points on the board but now have only 4. It is even less than Luton town. Every they lucky escape the relegation. Thus far this season, scenario would be different.
