Roberto De Zerbi joins French club as new manager

Roberto De Zerbi has left Brighton & Hove Albion in a move no one saw coming. Many people believed that the Italian manager was among the best in the Premier League the previous season. Roberto De Zerbi was on course to put the Brighton-based club on the map of European football.

Roberto De Zerbi has joined French Club Marseille as their new manager. Marseille is an iconic Ligue 1 French Club that has lost their identity in recent years. A manager like De Zerbi could be the key to unlocking the previous glory of the French club. The Italian manager has joined the club recently and is looking forward to starting the preseason with them this July.

Roberto De Zerbi: “I’m delighted to be joining the Olympique de Marseille. I had a very strong desire to join the club.

The history and prestige that surround OM, the passion and fervour of its supporters, and the seriousness and enthusiasm shown to me by Frank, Pablo, and Medhi were all decisive factors in my decision to embark on this exciting challenge.

I can’t wait to sit on the bench at the Orange Vélodrome. This time, as OM coach, help the club regain the position that Marseille deserves.”

With his new club, he will aim to repeat his tremendous Premier League success from the previous one and a half seasons with Brighton. It will be interesting to see how Roberto uses the squad he has at his disposal at the club. Olympique de Marseille has a tremendous amount of talent in their squad. De Zerbi will love to take this squad to glory. His biggest challenge would be taking down Paris Saint-Germain.

He moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2021 after spending three seasons in Emilia-Romagna, where the Neroverdi made a name for themselves in the top third of the table. The club finished the season in first place after eighteen games, but the geopolitical situation in Ukraine forcefully ended the adventure early.

He signed with Brighton in 2022. He was well-known for his attacking style and his teams’ winning records. After leading Brighton to their best-ever Premier League sixth-place finish in his first season in England, he led the Seagulls to Brighton’s first-ever appearance in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 in 2023–24.

In recent months, the 45-year-old coach has been connected to several prominent positions, with teams like Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona purportedly interested in hiring him.
