Phil Jones didn’t attend a single training session, says Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has said that Phil Jones hasn’t attended a single training session. The centre-back has been injured ever since Ten Hag’s arrival.

Speaking about Jones, Erik said,

“I can’t say (if Jones will play again this season). What I can say is that he’s not available for training since the first day of training this season so I think there’s not an opportunity for you to recover quickly and be available quickly.”

Current Premier League Standings

Jones was dubbed to be the next defensive prodigy when he joined the Reds in 2011. Sir Alex Ferguson made a bold prediction after Manchester United won the title in 2013. He said,

“Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player,”

However, this prediction from Sir Alex hasn’t aged well. It’s been downhill for Phil Jones ever since. From being trolled on the internet to constant abuse from fans and critics due to inconsistent performances. His issues with fitness impacted his consistency a lot. Phil Jones has made only 4 appearances in the last 6 years for Manchester United and by the looks of it, he’s not getting another appearance any time soon.

Jones’ contract situation

Jones’ contract expires at the conclusion of the season, and United have the option of extending it for another year, though that appears unlikely under Ten Hag. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bizarrely signed Jones to a new deal in 2019, rather than allowing him to depart for free, but Ten Hag will most likely let the Englishman try his luck elsewhere. Jones is still only 30. He still has the chance to have a respectable end to his career. However, it will almost only happen with him leaving Manchester United. Jones currently earns almost 110,000 pounds per week at Manchester United. It will be a daunting task for any other club to match such humongous wages for an out of favor player like him.
