Liverpool’s Mike Gordon to depart amid sale chaos

About Football Express UK

In the aftermath of Fenway Sports Group (FSG)’s decision to sell Liverpool FC, there has been chaos at Anfield. Sporting director Julian Ward had announced his departure next summer, just one year since his arrival.

However, another departure that has gone under the radar is that of Mike Gordan. Gordon was a key FSG member, responsible for managing the club at Merseyside. He will be replaced by Billy Hogan. Hogan has a strong relationship with both Ward and former Sporting director Micheal Edwards as well as manager Jurgen Klopp. Hogan’s focus will likely be on finding new investors for the club.

What role did Mike Gordon play at Liverpool?

Gordon had a quiet public persona despite having arguably one of the more important jobs in the club’s hierarchy. He plays a significant role in the day-to-day running of the club, particularly having a hand at the AXA Training Centre at Kirkby.

This behind-the-scenes role saw him be partly responsible at least, for the rise of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, and the vast glories they achieved under the German. There was likely no one better suited to achieving a high price for the club.

FSG had purchased the English giants for a mere £300m in October 2010. They would be looking to sell the club for a hefty profit at around the £ 4 billion mark. This would be not unlike Todd Boehly’s acquisition of Chelsea a few months prior.

Manchester United is also in a similar situation to Liverpool. The notoriously infamous Glazers have announced their intent to sell the club some time ago.
