In the last week of the summer transfer window, Chelsea made a surprising late inquiry. That is in an attempt to secure the services of Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi. Awoniyi became the subject of interest from Chelsea as they sought to acquire the talented Nottingham Forest attacker.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea initiated contact regarding the signing of Awoniyi. That is during the last 48 hours of the transfer window. The Blues did secure the signing of Nicolas Jackson over the summer. However, he did not display clinical finishing in front of goal.
With Christopher Nkunku sidelined until later this year, Chelsea appeared to explore the possibility of securing another striker, showing interest in Nottingham Forest’s Awoniyi. However, this potential move did not progress any further. Interestingly, Forest did manage to secure the signing of a Chelsea player, Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Nottingham Forest made a decisive move to acquire Awoniyi from Union Berlin in 2022, shelling out a substantial £17.5 million fee to bring him back to England. Awoniyi displayed significant promise throughout the previous season, but he truly hit a purple patch towards the end of the campaign, netting six goals in the final four games, including a memorable brace against Chelsea.
What gives Chelsea interest on Awoniyi?
The 26-year-old has carried his outstanding form from the previous season into the current one. Finding the net in each of the first three games. Even when Awoniyi didn’t register a goal against Chelsea over the weekend, he contributed by providing the assist for Anthony Elanga. The latter scored the decisive winning goal.
Awoniyi’s repertoire extends beyond being a potent striker with pace; he has demonstrated both his finishing skills and the ability to create opportunities for his teammates. Emerging as a versatile and well-rounded forward, Awoniyi’s stellar performances for Nottingham Forest garnered attention from Chelsea. However, manager Steve Cooper must be thrilled to have retained his services.
A potential transfer to Chelsea would have marked Awoniyi’s return to one of the Premier League’s prominent clubs once more.
