Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa linked with Premier League return

Diego Costa

Former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has been linked with a surprise move back to the Premier League. Wolves seem to be interested in the former Chelsea star’s services after new signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffered a devastating knee injury. The 25-year-old Austrian striker suffered anterior cruciate ligament in their 1-0 win over Southampton. He had only recently joined Wolves from Stuttgart last Wednesday. There are fears that he will miss the remainder of the season.

Wolves manager Bruno Lage lacks options in attack with 31-year-old Raul Jimenez his only first-team striker available. Jimenez also may have suffered a groin injury in the warm-up before Saturday’s game. Thus, Wolves may turn to free agent Costa to prove that he can still cut it in the Premier League.

How will Diego Costa’s future take form?

The forward will likely arrive at the club’s training grounds on Tuesday and will undergo medical checkups. The former Chelsea striker has not been playing since leaving Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro in January. There are thus some concerns over his fitness.

The Spain international shall receive a one-year contract if his medicals go well. Depending on his subsequent performances, this may be extended further.

Costa is a proven Premier League goal scorer. During his time with Chelsea, he scored 52 times in 89 games between August 2014 and May 2017 and won two titles. However, since leaving the Blues he has struggled, scoring only 19 goals in all competitions.
