Reyna is permanently parting ways with Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund

German giants Borussia Dortmund have decided to permanently part their ways with American sensation Giovanni Reyna.

Reyna joined Borussia Dortmund back in 2019 at the age of 17. He was the youngest star in the rising at that time. However, it has 4 years and he has not been up to the mark at all. All the hype and excitement around him vanished. In the previous season, he was also sent on a loan to Nottingham Forest, where he did not perform well.

After a disappointing loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Reyna himself doesn’t know what to do with his career. As of now, he is with his national team playing in the Copa America. However, it seems that he is coming back from his International duties as the USA failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament.

What went wrong with Reyna?

Back in 2020, Borussia Dortmund bought Giovanni Reyna was promoted to the senior team. He was rated exceptionally well by every coach he has played under. High hopes were on him. But, to everyone’s surprise, he did not perform well. In 4 years, he has only played 121 games for the team in black and yellow. In those games, he was only able to contribute in 34 goals. These numbers did not justify all the hype and attention, Reyna carried with himself.

Reyna was sent on a loan spell last season at Nottingham Forest. The German club thought that a change in the environment could help the American improve and regain his form back. But it was of no use. The American only appeared in 10 games where he provided only 1 assist. He played a total of 238 minutes in his loan spell at Nottingham Forest. Nottingham’s manager Nuno Espirito Santos did not believe in Reyna much. The American, most of the time, came from the bench. Under Santos, he only started in two games which was disappointing.

What is next for Giovanni Reyna

The future of Reyna is uncertain and up in the air right now. There aren’t any reports of clubs who are keen to sign him. But Dortmund have decided to sell him on a permanent transfer.

“I just want to go somewhere where I’m valued and get to play a lot and have an important role on the team. Whether it’s at Dortmund or somewhere else, I just want to find the best solution for myself.”

Gio Reyna on his future

The United States was recently eliminated from the Copa America. So Reyna might be returning very soon. Maybe negotiations will start once he returns to Dortmund.
