Former midfielder Tim Cahill is set to remain at Everton despite the hiring of Kevin Thelwell as Director of Football.
According to 90Min journalist Graeme Bailey, the ex Australia international played a key role in the club’s appointment of Frank Lampard.
The Australian has impressed club officials as well as the new coach. Cahill is now set for an extended stay at Goodison Park. The club hierarchy rates the work that he has done so far.
BIG CHALLENGE AHEAD FOR EVERTON AND CAHILL
According to rumours, Cahill had a big part to play in the appointment of Kevin Thelwell. Everton approached Thelwell rather than the other way around. Thelwell’s most recent position was the Sporting Director role at New York Red Bulls where he has been since the summer of 2020. Cahill knows the New York club well after having played for them also so it is no surprise he was instructed to seek out Thelwell.
As an ex-player, Cahill brings the required amount of experience and the right mentality that the club needs right now. He knows the club and its fundamentals inside out and is a valuable addition. It makes perfect sense to have him on board.
Cahill knows what he needs to do to make Everton competitive and challenge for titles. The 42-year-old also has a good understanding of the owners and board members and is also a respected figure in the dressing room.
Manager Frank Lampard also values his contributions highly. The two have faced each other several times in the Premier League as players. Overall, this seems like a sensible move from Everton‘s side. The Toffees are having a torrid season so far and need all the help they can get. Everton will hope that Tim Cahill staying would be a boon for them.
