Speculation is mounting that Arsenal is in for Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio. It was reported in midweek that Arsenal has already made an offer to the 26-year-old, who is out of contract in the Spanish capital within 18 months.

It is still early days in the saga but Asensio, who will only have a year left on his contract this June, will have a busy window with several clubs interested in him.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Real Madrid is asking for a sum of £50 million for Asensio. And the Gunners are willing to match it. Asensio has a release clause of £587 million.

According to Sport, Asensio will not entertain a potential contract extension unless they increase his salary, which is under £4.2 million per year right now – or £80,796 per week.

OUR VERDICT ON THE ASENSIO TRANSFER

This could be a fairly good signing for Arsenal however not worth the £50 million that is being reported. Mostly because the Spanish winger will have just a year left on his contract come June. That essentially means that Los Blancos will want to sell him no matter what.

Real Madrid does not hold any power in negotiations and the asking price can be brought down even further. Madrid will want to get rid of him in the summer so that he doesn’t leave on a free in 2023.

Arsenal isn’t the only suitor interested, with the same report noting Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund being reportedly keen, but the Blancos aren’t holding many cards.

It will be interesting to see where the winger ends up. A busy transfer window awaits the two clubs regardless of this deal.
